Do You Know Jed and Vicki? ...

So. I see from my web stats that a few of our photographer colleagues read this blog. Honestly folks, although we're glad to have you here, we're both mystified and flattered.

If you are a photographer and you are reading this today, what you really ought to do is click right over to Jed and Vicki Taufer's blog and read the latest entry.

As many of you know, Jed and Vicki have been wonderful friends and mentors to us.  So a few weeks ago, when photographers were palying a little game of blog tag, I decided to tag Jed. What he finally chose to write has so much more thought, insight and depth than any of the silliness that you are likely to find here from day to day.

I often wonder what it is that gives some photographers such a good eye. After reading Jed's post today, I am led to believe that the eye is informed most by what we see when we are not looking at the world through a fancy piece of glass. And although I haven't a clue about video games, (and, if you want to know the truth, I really don't think Jed's post was about video games) it was a wonderful treat for me to be able to read the thoughts of a thinker, the words of a writer.

This just in: if you want to improve your photography, put the camera down. A little reading and a little thinking really can't hurt.

Today, at least, Jed's blog is a very good place to start.

(Note to Jed: Yes, indeed that post counts. Tons. Definitely worth waiting for...)

Kristen + Dan: Married!! ...

So many of you have taken the time to tell me how much you enjoyed Kristen and Dan's engagement photos, so I know you'll want to hear all about their wedding, too! They were married Saturday morning at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in a wedding that we thought truly reflected their wonderful and independent style. Things we loved: the bride's beautiful pale gold satin dress with a wonderful lace overlay; buttons from Kristen's great-grandmother's dress incorporated into her bouquet; Dan's vintage wingtips;the bride's lace shawl (she knit it herself, people!!!);the beautiful blue cake, the fact that they are both changing their last names.

We had so much fun with you , Kristen and Dan. Thank you for sharing your beautiful day with us. You will find your sneak peek in the slideshow below.

Michael + Alexis ...

Michael and Alexis, who live in New York but will be married in the Detroit area next May, stopped by last week to have their engagement portraits made. We did their session at Cranbrook, which is where Michael proposed.

Cranbrook is, of course, always beautiful, and it was a real pleasure to spend time there with two people who are so obviously in love. Here's a little bit of what we saw.

Beth + Dan ...

We traveled to East Lansing yesterday to photograph the wedding of Beth and Dan.

We've been looking forward to their wedding ever since we first met Beth last January. I was so eager to see her chocolate brown and pale blue color palette and I was not disappointed. The blue and brown wedding cake was gorgeous!

Even though we were not allowed close enough to photograph much of the ceremony, we did manage to "sneak" in a few good photos of the kiss! (And we hope that the many guests with point and shoot cameras made good use of them during the service! We think that they did. :) )

Afterwards, we made our way over to the MSU Gardens for some fun couple and wedding party photos. The gardens are always beautiful and it is a real pleasure to photograph there.

Congratulations, Beth and Dan.  Thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your wedding day.  Your sneak peek is in the slideshow below.

kristen + dan ...

Kristen and Dan are old friends. They have known each other since third grade and they seem totally and completely comfortable with one another. When you are with them, you feel as if you are one of their old friends, too.

They are getting married in a few weeks, so we went back to the "scene of the crime" -- Lakewood Elementary School -- for their e-session. Good times.  Take a look:

Luciano Pavarotti ...

Pavarotti_ap_photo_2

From Italy this morning comes the very sad news that Luciano Pavarotti has passed away..

As I mentioned here only a few days ago, I have a love of opera which began in my childhood.

I once had the very distinct honor of hearing Pavarotti live. That concert is something that I will never forget -- in his voice there was a pristine and perfect distillation of time and space. To hear him was to be forced to let everything else fall away and to understand perfectly what it meant to be in the presence of greatness.

Rest in peace, Maestro.
