Michigan Heart Gallery ...
We love the idea that one photograph can make a difference, so we were very honored when we got the call to participate in this year's Michigan Heart Gallery. For those of you who don't know, the Heart Gallery is a traveling photo exhibition created to encourage people to adopt children who might not otherwise have a home. Opening ceremonies for the 2007 Gallery were held last Wednesday in Lansing.
Many of these children are over the age of eight, some may need to be adopted with their siblings, some may have health issues, many are of color.
A startling number of children in Michigan spend the better part of their childhoods in state sponsored care. Did you know that? We didn't. The idea behind the gallery is that people may see the photographs of some of these children and be moved to find a place in their hearts -- and their homes -- for them. All of the photographers involved participate on a volunteer basis.
We were very moved by the opportunity to hear and to meet some of the kids involved, and we hope that you will visit the exhibit when it comes to a town near you. We certainly feel that by participating we received much more than we gave, and we look forward to hearing that the child we photographed has found her "forever family."
